Jellyfish stings are painful and last three to five hours leaving itching and red welts for days. The tentacles of jellfish contain toxin-carrying nematocysts, and when the tentacles come in contact with flesh, they can release millions of these pointed, corkscrew nematocysts. Some of the nematocysts deposited on the surface of the skin fire immediately, penetrating the skin and releasing toxins causing intense pain.
